Who is Underpriced Furniture?

As a family owned company, it is important for us to stay in touch with our customers. We wanted to take the time to offer a peek behind the curtain.

Our journey has been a long and winding one. We began in Atlanta as Waterbed Showcase, dealing only waterbeds. Opening a small store on “Furniture Row” in Norcross, competition was fierce. There is no other higher concentration of furniture stores in the state and Waterbed Showcase constantly found itself struggling to stay on top of the competition. As time passed and business grew Waterbed Showcase evolved into Plan-it-Oak. We expanded from just waterbeds to all solid oak furniture. We added staff and bought extra space in our small location. We added a fully functioning warehouse to the rear of our location and sold and shipped all furniture in one spot. During this age of furniture, wait times for products to arrive from manufactures could be as long as 2-3 months. After growing a loyal customer base and struggling through delayed manufacture ship dates and ever climbing prices, our owners decided there had to be a better way. Underpriced Furniture was born. The goal: offer an incredible value on quality furnishings at the absolute lowest prices. How do we do that? The first step was negotiating better prices from out manufactures and instead of pocketing the difference, pass the savings on to our customers. The next step, put pressure on these manufactures to give us the products our customers want, immediately. Now Underpriced Furniture could offer the lowest pricings, on the best products, and deliver it within a week. We adopted a new motto: make a little, a lot of times. We wanted our customers, not just to buy a sofa or a chair, but to buy their entire home from us. We wanted them to tell our friends about us. Referred business was a major part of our customer base as we did not advertise. Underpriced Furniture grew. Quickly becoming a giant on the strip. This period in our company’s history marked a massive leap in our showroom. We purchased the entire building, effectively tripling our showroom size and make us one of the largest showrooms in Georgia, and we moved our warehouse off site to allow us to hold even more furniture. This allowed us to also offer one of the services we are most proud of: same day delivery to many local zones. It’s a practice that we continue today and constantly expand upon. Business had grown exponentially, our showroom was expanding and we were pushing the envelope with displays, adding color options vertically within the showroom to give our customers more options. Many companies would be satisfied. Not us. We wanted to offer the very best experience possible to our customers as well as the highest job satisfaction imaginable for employees. This is when we decided to make the switch from a commission sales staff; something that is unheard of in the retail sales industry. Not only does that increase job satisfaction with our employees by creating a team oriented environment, but also it removes the pressure that a commission sales person places on the customer. Customers can now shop with enjoyment and confidence, knowing that the sales staff is here to guide and help them, instead of pressure and influence them. Our goal is to make each and every customer feel like family.

This year marks our 30th year in business, and rest assured, Underpriced Furniture isn’t done yet. We will continue to push the envelope, constantly striving to provide a better experience for our customers. Stay tuned throughout the year for new and exciting announcements from UPF. We can’t wait to serve you better!

Trend Spotlight: Midcentury Modern

July 24, 2015
By

With roots in our not-so-distant past, we don’t have to go back too far in history to recall the heyday of midcentury modern furniture design. Just as the name implies, the aesthetic was born mid-20th century (sometime during the 1940s, lasting until about 1970) when designers began to concentrate on scaled-down forms and clean, sleek…
